Shareholder Handbook 2008

The Mission Statement and Farmer Kris' letter below are taken from our Handbook.  Here is the full Handbook in pdf format.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Community Supported Garden at La Vista serves as a source of renewal for human, social and physical health by providing healthy and nutritious food, by the building of a diverse community, and through the practice of social justice.

We demonstrate a model for diversified, sustainable, small-scale community supported agriculture through responsible stewardship of the land and by supporting our farmer with dependable and just compensation.

We respect the soil, water and air through organic methods of growing, by conserving water and by reducing fossil fuel emissions into the air.

We grow in harmony with the other-than-human species present here through a consciousness of and care for this local region of life, considering the ecosystem when making our decisions and collaborating with other organizations in promoting life.

We recognize that both this land and a sense of mission are pure gift. With insight we ponder that these opportunities to plant, to cultivate, to harvest and to share are themselves revelations of the Divine. We associate ourselves with this part of the Great Work* and are blessed with wonder and awe.

This project is also supported, in part, by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. It flows from the Oblate priority of  "Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation."

* "The Great Work now, as we move into a new millennium, is to carry out the transition from a period of human devastation of the Earth to a period when humans would be present to the planet in a beneficial manner."
-Thomas Berry, The Great Work, 1999

Our Farmer

Kris Larson and his family (Stacey and their son, Jacob) will be returning to the Community Supported Garden at La Vista for the 2008 season. Prior to this position, Kris had several years of organic farming experience. In 2006, he had the opportunity to work in the Midwest for the first time and has developed even greater skills. He is looking forward to the many exciting changes scheduled for La Vista this year, including our new irrigation system.

Dear Shareholders,

Hello again, and welcome to the sixth season of the Community Supported Garden at La Vista!

This year we continue to work our land, develop our soils, and sow and harvest the plethora of crops you've come to love. We are poised to continue our past successes while meeting head-on the challenges of small-scale agriculture in ways that are healing for us and for the land.

In each of the past few years we've faced challenges from drought and pests. We've already made great headway against drought. Last November, our infrastructure committee laid out an extensive irrigation line that gives us full water pressure at every part of the field. This is a vast improvement over previous years.

As for pests, I plan an all-out assault the old-fashioned way: with lots and lots of flowers. I plan to confuse and bother our pests through colors and smells and by attracting the bugs that prey on our pests. The result?

Fewer pests and a very beautiful and diverse farm! You can't beat the all-natural way.

My favorite part of farming is seeing all of you and exchanging this excellent, home-grown food that brings us together. I wish you the best this season, and, as always, many happy and nutritious, meals!

   Kris
